In this talk,  Goodman and Kristov will share their vision of an open source operating system for microgrids. In short, an open grid OS will allow the electric grid to function as a network composed of connected, yet also stand-alone and autonomous, networks of distributed renewable energy resources.
The integrated, yet decentralized paradigm for electricity overturns all aspects of the traditional electric industry. Historically, supply has been dominated by large-scale, central generating plants and one-way distribution services, to deliver power to meet consumer demand. In this new model, energy users and energy resources are local, co-located at the grid edge, with the grid providing residual energy needs and a platform for transactions. The implications of this envisioned future-state will require a whole-system multi-layered architecture that includes the physical electric network, communication and control systems, business models, markets, and regulatory frameworks.
