Technical Debt for Linux-based Distributions: Estimating What You are Missing - Jesus M Gonzalez-Barahona, Bitergia & Paul Sherwood, Codethink

Linux-based distributions are the core of many software systems. Every time they are deployed, installed packages are already lagging behind wavefront upstream versions, causing a certain "technical debt". As time passes, this technical debt only increases, until packages are updated.

Estimating the lag between what is available upstream, or in a given "gold standard" distribution, and in a certain deployment, is not easy. But when deciding if it is time to upgrade, estimating that lag is fundamental, because that is the main reason for the upgrade, which has to be confronted to other reasons to stay in the deployed version: stability, "it just works", familiarity for maintainers, etc.

This talk will elaborate on the this "technical debt" (or lag) for distributions, its importance in real-world cases, and how it can estimated, including real examples and ways of measuring it.
