Through its history, free and open source software has come to rely on the recognition of individual contributions. Passing information about those contributions and their copyright through ChangeLogs, commit messages, version control history, DCOs or similar have become an imperfect reality. Where SPDX and the DCO seek to address the challenge of passing some source code metadata, they can be seen as manifestations of the need to establish provenance for source code contributions. Jonas Öberg will talk about why provenance for source code is so important for the community, and industry, how this relates to the XKCD comic series, and what we can and should do to help each other, and those wishing to adopt free and open source software.
