An obvious tension that exists in commercial open source endeavors between the need for control and the need to build and sustain an open ecosystem. During this session we will look at it as a multi-variable optimization problem and talk about the decisions that can be made to balance the well being of the commercial OSS sponsor, with the health and well being of the general community. We will look through some of the decisions made during the early days of the Kubernetes project, talk about the issue at hand that drove those decisions and relate the outcomes of those decisions in terms of community health and vitality. Craig will also spend a few minutes talking in general about the philosophy of commercializing open source technology.
